The Kensingon, PE Heritage Home Ownership History Report consists of over 250 profiles of historic homes within the Town of Kensington. Again, it must be emphasized that the report was a Senior Surfers lead initiative. Before this project, information regarding Kensington’s heritage homes was extremely limited, and it was the Senior Surfers that recognised the need for this type research in the community. After a successful application to the New Horizons for Seniors Program, the Senior Surfers began training with staff at the Provincial Registry of Deed Office. Then, in turn, were able to share their newly acquired skills with Island Narratives researchers in December 2010.
It could be difficult for the untrained eye to conceive of the amount of work that went into the heritage homes report since it only appears to be charts of names and dates. However, in order to conduct this type of research properly everyone involved had to acquire a sound knowledge of professional legal deed and title searching. Such skills do not evolve overnight and it takes many hours to learn how to work with legal documents, maps, microfilm, deed books, computer software, and the list goes on.
In summary, although deed searching only illustrates land transactions, the names of people associated with the property is official. Moreover, construction dates for homes can be speculated from around the time a smaller house lot was cut out from a larger property. The amount of hours and dedicated hard work that went into this report is astounding, and is certainly a significant contribution to Kensington’s history.
