Parade Time in Kinkora
Three entries in the 1985 Somerset Festival Parade. The first float celebrates the arrival of the Irish in kinkora in 1835. The settlement was known as the “Anderson Road Settlement or Irish Town” and went through Sou’West, Somerset until finally known as kinkora when the railway station was built. The second entry is the fire truck from the local kinkora Volunteer Fire Department created in 1957. The third entry is from the neighbouring community of Middleton called “Middleton in Winter” and shows off an old sleigh.

John A. Shreenan ploughing in a row of potatoes with a team of horses and a single plough. With him are his half-brothers Reg and Frank and his daughter Laurena. The plough makes a drill, the young boys plant the potato set, then the plough made another pass and covered it up.

The efficiency of potato harvesting continued to evolve after the invention of the mechanical digger. The potatoes were bagged and then lifted onto a truck in the next row. The digger is pulled by a tractor. One person discards stocks and rocks at the front and the potatos are carried on belts to the back where rocks etc are picked out again and then they are bagged.

The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, visited PEI in 1998 and one of her stops was in kinkora for a public meeting at the Community Center. kinkora and many of its surrounding communities such as Shamrock, Emerald, Middleton and Kelly’s Cross were first populated by Irish immigrants.

This quilt was made by the Maple Leaf Senior Citizens Club. The ladies would meet in the senior’s room of the Community Complex and work on the quilts. This particular quilt won a number of awards in local exhibitions in 1988. Holding the quilt is (L-R) Mable Smith, Madelin Roberts, Mary McIver, Jennie Roberts, and Mary Hamill.

Sr.Theresa Perry, Sr. Mary Smith, and Sr. Frances Johnston are members of the Sisters of Saint Martha. They all lived in the St. Stanislaus Convent in Kinkora and taught in the local schools.

Robert’s Canteen Grocery and Arcade, formerly the Derby Restaurant opened in 1948. It was a very popular hang out for the young people of the area with an arcade and pool tables.

The current Saint Malachy's church in Kinkora was built in 1900.
