Description
The Former Public School was built around 1900 for the Souris School District. It was intended to combine the educational services by the two exstiting schools, the Grammer school on Chapel Ave and the Colville school on Church Ave. The first floor was used to teach the lower classes, consisting on two classrooms, and the second floor was used to teach up to grade 10, consisting of three classrooms. The 1920's and 30's the Souris Cadet Corps No 255 used it for a rifle range for small arms training. Each classroom had a coal burning stove at the front of the room. In May 1954, the school was damaged by a fire and repairs were made. In 1955 grades 9 and 10 classes moved to the new high school later to become the Souris Regional High School, then in Feb, 1968 the school closes it's doors when the new Souris Consolidated School was opened. The school board sold the home and was later used for a restaurant and then an Ultramar.
